Mahatma Gandhi
"The sacrifice which causes sorrow to the doer of the sacrifice is no sacrifice. Real sacrifice lightens the mind of the doer and gives him a sense of peace and joy. The Buddha gave up the pleasures of life because they had become painful to him."
- Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi had lived a life that many of us could hardly think of living. As a true saint, Gandhi had sacrificed many material goods, but more importantly, selfish and private goals. Even though Gandhi could have led a comfortable and luxurious life as an attorney, "he lived each and every moment thinking of the millions around him that lived in poor conditions" (The Indian Express Newspaper). This affected him enough to change his life goals, motives, and living styles. "Gandhi was with all, everyone was also with him" (Jawaharlal Nehru). Fighting with only words, Gandhi believed that "strength does not come from physical capacity. It comes from an indomitable will" (Mahatma Gandhi). He had incorporated and earned the trust of the Indian sub-continent through shedding all of his material goods as well as by living as a common man and working rigorously to gain India’s Independence.

"The law of sacrifice is uniform throughout the world. To be effective it demands the sacrifice of the bravest and the most spotless." I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil is permanent." |
