Influence of Gandhiji
Encouraging nonviolence
Nelson MandelaNelson Mandela himself wrote an article for TIME magazine on January 3rd 2000 called The Sacred Warrior, about how Gandhi had influenced him. Some of what he wrote was that he dared to exhort nonviolence in a time where the violence at Hiroshima and Nagasaki had overwhelmed us. He exhorted morality when science, technology and the capitalist order had made it redundant.

Mahatma Gandhi used civil disobedience to bring to light the injustice that people suffered within the British Empire. He showed the world the brutality of the oppressors and brought about a cry by humanity for change. Gandhi said he could only have succeeded in a country under laws that existed in the British Empire. Martin Luther King knew that America was a country of laws similar to Great Britain. He knew if he showed the brutality of the South that Americans would not stand for the brutal treatment of American citizens.
