The 1912 assassination attempt of the Viceroy of India, Lord Hardinge was also known as the Delhi Conspiracy Case. This plan was created by the Indian revolutionaries underground and was headed by Rashbehari Bose. "On December 23, 1912, a homemade bomb was thrown into the Viceroys Howdah, [a bed] carried on a camels' or elephants back, when the ceremonial procession... moved through the Chandi Chowk suburb of Delhi." (Delhi Conspiracy Court Case) Although injured in the attempt, the Viceroy escaped with flesh wounds, but his Mahout, the person who rides an elephant, was killed in the attack. "Lady Hardinge was unscathed. Lord Hardinge himself was injured all over the back, legs, and head by fragments of the bomb, the flesh on his shoulders being torn in strips." (The New York Times) The investigations in the aftermath of the assassination attempt led to the Delhi Conspiracy trial. "Basant Kumar Biswas, Amir Chand and Rashbehari Bose were convicted... and executed for their [roles in] the conspiracy." (Investigation Report) Biswas was identified as the person who threw the bomb.
