Thesis
In ancient times, India was a magnet for adventurous opportunists and attracted a variety of people of different ethnicities. Its history is replete with invaders from foreign lands with the interests of looting. The British came as traders in the early 17th century and the merchants essentially ruled India by the late 16th century. With subterfuge and superior weapons, the East India Company subdued the native rulers, thus rendering them essentially ineffective, taking their rights and independence away from the Indians. However, after 200 years of British rule, India eventually regained its independence on August 15th, 1947. Due to the peaceful ways of Mahatma Gandhi and to the effort of the leaders and the masses, India was able to gain freedom from the British and since then have continued to progress rapidly to this day.
"When I despair, I remember that all through history the way of truth and love have always won. There have been tyrants and murderers, and for a time, they can seem invincible, but in the end, they always fall. Think of it - always."
- Mahatma Gandhi
